Introduction | By Karen Angelini, MBA | Lavender @Trending Pink
Women do have a sharp sense of smell. Our noses attract us to lovely perfumes and soothing sleep aids but also wet our appetites before a delicious meal. More importantly, smells help us to avoid danger. Disagreeable smells encourage us to step away from poisonous substances, the wrong person with whom to mate, spoiled foods or other dangerous situations.
Notably in 2014, a Brazilian and UCSF-based research team (see footnote 1) examined autopsied brains from eighteen healthy men and women who had worked in careers where olfactory senses mattered (eg. cooking, coffee tasting) and discovered that women had more olfactory bulbs (43% more cells and 50% more neurons) than men.
I recently had a head cold and briefly lost my sense of smell. While allergies and sinus infections often are the cause of temporary “Anosmia”, I also learned that it can be an early symptom of both Alzheimer's (2,3,4) and Multiple Sclerosis, diseases that affect many more women than men.
We need to ask ourselves, as researchers and as women, why.
I invite you to use this forum to comment, to demand, to recruit and to conduct more research with women as subjects so that we begin to discuss and figure out why these correlations exist.(5)
