The Little Kitten that Could | By Jen Buhler | Animal Kingdom@Pharmative
Meet Grizzly, a spunky little 4 month old kitten who was surrendered to my hospital after he was found severely injured and in desperate need of medical care. He was barely 5 weeks old and his right front paw was wide open, with the top layer of skin gone and teeny bones exposed. Fortunately, the large amount of maggots that been eating away the necrotic flesh had also helped keep any infection at bay. This is also how Griz got his first nickname, Maggot.
Our doctors originally had two thoughts on how to help Maggot, the first being amputation and the second, due to the severity of the injury, was euthanasia. After further flushing of the wound, X-rays, and seeing that this little ball of fur had a strong will to live, our medical director had another thought. What if we put Maggot on antibiotics, pain meds, and daily bandage changes to see if the wound would begin to heal without surgery? It was also at this point that Maggot met one of our technicians who immediately fell in love with him and claimed him as her new four-legged buddy. We decided to try the third option and Maggot, the abandoned gimpy kitten, became Grizzly, the Little Kitten That Could. Daily wet-to- dry bandage changes (which acted as a poultice) soon became regular bandage changes with antibiotic cream every other day. His little broken toe was protected by the thick bandage wrap and pain meds were stopped after only a week as he seemed completely unfazed and pain-free. In fact, he was a perfectly playful happy kitten! After only 10 days, granulated tissue completely covered the exposed bones and before we knew it, the bandage was off for good. Griz’s paw had some muscle atrophy and his third and fourth claw’s nails had grown in a little wonky, but overall he was almost as good as new.
Today Griz, the Little Kitten that Could, has completely recovered and is happily living with his new family (which includes two dogs and another cat) and driving his new mom crazy!

Awesome care.
He's doing great! He was just in for his 4 month check up and final vaccines for the year! Here is a photo of his foot all healed up!
