⁣Women Who Shared Womb with a Brother Tend to Have Poorer Life Outcomes | By Benjamin Ryan | PHARMATIVE.com
A large study of Norwegians who today would be in their 40s and early 50s has found that women who shared their mother’s womb with a twin brother have lower rates of various metrics of success in life. In theory, being exposed to testosterone during gestation may have led such females to adopt certain male traits that society frowns upon among females, and that this difference among them ultimately held them back in life.
Publishing their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academic of Sciences, U.S. and Norwegian researchers ...

⁣After a 1st Cardiovascular Event, Statins Cut The Risk Of a 2nd in Half | By Benjamin Ryan | PHARMATIVE.com | PNNmedia.com
People who have been diagnosed with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease reduce their risk of a subsequent major cardiovascular disease–related health event by nearly 50 percent if they take a statin over the long-term. That said, a recent analysis of a large patient population found that scant numbers of individuals diagnosed with any conditions under this cardiovascular umbrella—coronary artery disease, heart attack, cardiovascular disease and peripheral artery disease—actually stuck with their statin prescription.
Presenting their findings at ...

⁣Logging Calories for Weight Loss- Of Course, There's an App for That | By Benjamin Ryan | PHARMATIVE.com at PNNmedia.com
Weight-loss studies have found that the best predictor of success is if people keep a running log of their calorie and fat intake. However, many people bristle at the thought of time needed to jot down every morsel.
According to a new study, such record keeping can take as little as 15 minutes a day.
Publishing their findings in the journal Obesity, researchers conducted a 24-week study that engaged 142 people in an online weight-loss intervention that included the use of a food-monitoring app. Additionally, the ...

⁣Men’s Push-Up Prowess May Predict Their Heart Disease Risk | @Ben Ryan | @Modern Medicine at PHARMATIVE.com
How many push-ups can you do?
Men who can bang out a greater number of push-ups have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease health events over a 10-year period than the low-push-up-capacity crowd. This finding from a study of firefighters could provide a simple, free test that clinicians can use to helppredict an individual’s long-term health prospects.
Publishing their findings in JAMA Network Open, researchers conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study between 2000 and 2010 of 1,562 male firefighters in Indiana. ...

⁣1 in 10 Adults Has a Food Allergy, Twice As Many Think They Do | @Ben Ryan | @Modern Medicine at PHARMATIVE.com
A new survey-based study has estimated that at least 10.8 percent of U.S. adults, or 26 million people, have a food allergy, while about 19 percent think they do.
Publishing their findings in JAMA Network Open, researchers conducted a population based survey study of 40,443 adults who had an average age of 47 years old, asking them about any food allergies. The study authors considered a reported allergy to a particular food convincing if the most severe reported reaction to that food included at least one symptom on a list developed by an expert panel. These ...

⁣Hitting The Sauna May Protect Against Cardiovascular Risks | @Modern Medicine at PHARMATIVE.com
Older Finnish adults who sit in the sauna more frequently and for longer durations have a lower rates of death from cardiovascular disease.
Publishing their findings in BMC Medicine, researchers analyzed the sauna-going habits of 1,688 Finnish citizens with an average age of 63 years old (and a range of 53 to 74 years old) at the study’s outset, just over half of whom were women.
The participants were followed between 1998 and 2015, for an average of 15 years, during which 181 of them died of cardiovascular-related causes. There was a linear, inverse relationship between the frequency of sauna ...

⁣Most People With Well-Known Cancer Gene Haven’t Been Tested For It | By @Ben Ryan | @Modern Medicine | Pharmative.com
Eight out of 10 people identified in a large cohort study as having either of the so-called BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic variants that are associated with cancer were not previously aware of this fact. This under diagnosis, researchers believe, reveals a critical shortcoming in the effort to use genetic testing to help prevent cancer.
Scientists first established the BRCA1/2 genetic variant’s association with breast cancer in the mid-1990s. More recently, studies have found that the variants are also associated with a higher ...
